Historic Heard Craig Home - McKinney, Tx Elizabeth was hired to design a period garden for the historical Heard-Craig home located in downtown McKinney, Texas. The home, located at 205 W. Hunt St., was built in 1900 by Stephen D. Heard and his wife Lillie. Their daughter, Katie Heard Craig, donated the home in 1970 to the women's clubs of McKinney so that they would always have a place to meet at no charge. Katie believed that such clubs were a tremendous benefit to the community through their civic projects and were an educational resource for all women. The 7,000 square foot home was restored in 1999-2000 to its original splendor and to reflect the grace and charm of the Victorian era. Now the garden has been updated and utilizes plants that are appropriate for the North Texas climate while reflecting the style and passion that Victorians had for gardening. Victorian gardens were fueled by new found wealth and leisure time. Gardeners from that time period devoted huge amounts of their income creating lavish gardens in an attempt to display their new wealth. They craved exotic plants from exotic places. They strived to pull away from the previous constraints of gardening and to create outdoor parlors full of lawns, trees, walkways, fences, odd shaped beds and structures. Victorians loved to fill the garden with arbors, pergolas, and gazebos and created little "retreats" throughout the garden with these structures. Elizabeth has utilized all of these features in designing and installing the gardens at the Heard-Craig home. The gardens include such features as a gazebo that will be the focus in outdoor weddings, a knot garden which includes a seating area surrounded by a bower, a secret garden tucked behind a tall evergreen hedge, and large flowing borders of perennials and flowering shrubs.
